By Friedrich Dürrenmatt

Translated by Alistair Beaton

The 25-year marriage of Alice, a resting actress, and Edgar, an old soldier, would be perfect - if they didn't want each other dead. The vicious cat and mouse games they play on the desolate island outpost which is their home, are interrupted by the arrival of Alice's cousin, and former lover, Kurt.

Dürrenmatt takes the characters and situations from Strindberg’s classic Dance of Death and turns it into a boxing metaphor set over 12 bruising comic rounds as a couple play out a death throes of a relationshipto to create this gleefully spiteful black comedy, written in 1968.

Play Strindberg runs from 11th September to 11th October 2014 at Ustinov Studio, Theatre Royal, Bath.

" Alistair Beaton has translated Durrenmatt without taking liberties…. the language is deliciously short and brutal, the humour as dark… " Kris Hallett - What'sOnStage
